this weekend are forecast to be close to freezing. the official count from the department of energy had 3.6 million customers across 11 states still without power. getting around in affected areas remains a challenge. the new york subway system remains shut down in lower manhattan. commuter rail systems in the new york suburbs are on limited service, as are new york's three large airports. >> tom: energy also remains a concern. late today the department of energy announced it will release emergency heating oil supplies to relieve a supply crunch due to sandy. meantime, many gasoline stations in the new york-new jersey area have closed because they have run out of gas or don't have electricity to get it out of the pump. erika miller reports >> reporter: six hours. that's how long drivers had to wait to fill up at this manhattan station. >> i got here at 6:00 am. >> reporter: the line stretched over 30 city blocks, but at least drivers could get gas. it's estimated that at least half of all stations in the metropolitan area are closed. in mount olive new jersey, some tried making the best

. it has a huge amount of moisture. it has a huge amount of energy that goes into the winds. how does this happen? every climate scientist knows perfectly well that when you have global warming you get more evaporation over the oceans lots more moisture in the air. when that happens you get heat in the oceans. heat transfers in storms into winds. the energy of the heat goes into the energy of the winds. the fact that we have this is a normal thing to happen when you have global warming. it is going to happen but you don't know exactly when and you don't know exactly where and you don't know exactly how big. but you do know these things are happening and they're going to happen. >> jennifer: so the purpose of this conversation is to convey to people, progressives who know that there is a causal link to be clear about it. to not be fudging about it. be clear. there is a systemic causation that links human activity and climate change to these huge weather events. >> right. systemic causation, we have a name for it.

and funnel in that energy. the fact that we're under an advisory should tell that you the folks at the alaska center expecting wave height rises of less than a foot. this is not an outright warning but still some coastal fluctuations in sea level are possible. any time after midnight to 3:00 in the morning and very likely this will get extended down the central coast, too. so use caution. if you're out at the harbors, you could see some unexpected rises of sea level of slightly above a foot in some of the coastal inlets and bays. 50s and 60s around the bay area. not much of a sea breeze yet. after we wrap up the week on a pretty warm note. high pressure has been keeping us very sunny and dry. we'll see it probably through at least monday. and this pattern breaks down, opening up the door for a weather system come wednesday that will bring us a chance of seeing some rain at this point. it still looks like we could see it rolling in around halloween, trick or treat time. during the day tomorrow, very sunny until late in the day. here come the coastal low clouds and fog. the air conditioning is

, we talk about powering back up after sandy, with the head of nextera energy. >> susie: hurricane sandy has created an energy shock in the northeast, gas pumps aren't working, supplies are tight, and where there is fuel, there are long lines; reminiscent of the 1970's gas shortage. with two major gasoline refineries in the northeast region still shut down, capacity is off 10%. and with spotty power, especially in parts of new jersey, gas pumps don't work, so many gas stations are closed to drivers, and people looking to fuel their generators. >> tom: airlines, trucking companies and railroads are all working to untangle the mess left in sandy's wake. bridges into manhattan are now open again, but not all the traffic tunnels have re-opened, and the subway remains closed. airports are re-opening but getting the northeast moving again faces a long road ahead. darren gersh reports. >> reporter: at sandy's peak, flooding covered the runways at new york's laguardia airport. as the waters recede, f.a.a. technicians are repairing landing lights and navigational systems. and airlines hope

in a relative hurricane drought, connecting energy, policy and disasters make little scientific sense. even the ipcc in its latest report would never -- you know, they act like scientists occasionally even though most climate science is junk science, they even would never tie an event ike this to climate change. here's the thing that i pointed out to you, andrew, the last category 3 hurricane was wilma, that was seven years ago. this is the longest period in a century in terms of how long we've been between category 3. back in 1954, between august '54 and august of 1955, the east coast saw three different storms make landfall each of which caused twice as much damage as sandy. now you weren't born in 1954. it caused twice as much. here's the chart of the average global temperature and this quietly was reported by the uk climate office. that shows the average variability from 14 degrees celsius which is the average. there's the no discernible rise in 16 years. >> cuomo's point he was trying to stay out of the controversial subject. he said the political ban derte doesn't want to get to. his

at 15 miles per hour. that expectation will flow. here it is. can you believe the energy of this super storm? eastern portions of it, of course, the hurricane, tropical elements, 9" of rain in delaware. western portions, more of a nor'easter, 9" of snow at least in west virginia and expecting potentially another foot. there's the rain and the snow that is still happening. here is the movement. right now you can see tuesday morning, the center of low pressu pressure. by tonight we're going to see it move and be in only western new york. by tomorrow, it looks from western pennsylvania just -- you can see just west of new york around toronto. so very slow to move. so even by wednesday and into thursday, new york and washington have 25 and 35-mile-per-hour wind gusts. so still a potent storm. the difficulty with this destruction, trying to clean up. this hurricane did not come in and go with certainly not a one-day quick hitter. we'll be doling with it thursday and even into friday. from sandy hook to islip, certainly not the picture anymore. still 50s and 60s today dropping 10 to 15 miles
